2020 Census Student Activities Mailed to Every School Across the Nation

The U.S. Census Bureau recently mailed 2020 Census Statistics in Schools (SIS) kits to every school in the nation. Mailed to every public, private and charter school administrator, the kits include information for teachers to get access to free activities and materials to use in classrooms during the 2020 Census.

The SIS kits include an administrator booklet which contains a printable flyer for teachers as well as a take home flyer for students, information on how to access downloadable material on census.gov/schools, and large colorful wall maps for classrooms containing student friendly statistics.

SIS is a nationwide initiative designed to engage educators in helping their communities achieve a complete count in the 2020 Census. Educators across the nation are encouraged to use free census classroom resources and activities to teach students about the importance of the census in determining political representation and how billions of dollars are distributed every year back to local communities based on census counts.

The kits come ahead of “Statistics in Schools Week: Everyone Counts!” From March 2-6, classrooms across the country will feature five days of themed classroom activities for pre-K-12 teachers and students on topics such as diversity and apportionment. At the end of the week, teachers are encouraged to give each student a take-home flyer about the importance of responding to the census to share with the adults in their home. SIS materials are free and available on the SIS website.

The Census Bureau and national education groups have worked together in an effort to help make sure we count everyone in the 2020 Census — including all children. For members of the media interested in speaking with a SIS teacher ambassador or Census Bureau representative, please email <pio@census.gov>.

About SIS:

The Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools (SIS) program offers K-12 educators free online activities, games and other resources to help them bring statistics to their classrooms. The more than 150 activities — created by teachers, for teachers — use real-life census data to help students understand statistics concepts and develop data analysis skills. For the 2020 Census, SIS has new resources for K-12 students, as well as for pre-K students, English language learners, and adults learning English as a second language. The new 2020 materials help students understand the importance of being counted in the decennial census so they can take that message home to the adults who live with them. Visit census.gov/schools to learn more, and follow the Census Bureau on FacebookTwitter and Pinterest to stay up to date on SIS news.
