Maryland Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed)
Maryland Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) is a nutrition education program that can be found in communities across the state. The program targets individuals and families eligible for SNAP (EBT) and offers resources to help people lead healthy lives through increased food access, improved nutrition quality, and physical activity. SNAP-Ed partners with community organizations in every county and Baltimore city to bring education programs and change the policies, systems, and environments of the community in an effort to improve the lives of Marylanders.
Maryland SNAP-Ed focuses on work within five initiative areas. These initiatives center on unique audiences and topic areas and are designed around specific outcomes. This site-based approach allows SNAP-Ed and collaborating partners to design programs specific to the individual, their family and their community.
- In the Farm to Family initiative, SNAP-Ed works with market managers, farmers, and shoppers at Farmers’ Markets across the state to promote healthy food selection, purchasing and consumption.
- SNAP-Ed works with preschool communities including Head Start and JUDY centers in the Healthy Tots, Healthy Families initiative to help youth and families establish life-long nutrition and physical activity habits at a young age.
- The Healthy School Communities initiative brings nutrition and physical activity education and programming that enhances the school wellness environment for children, staff and families.
- The Healthy Changes for Out of School Youth initiative extends SNAP-Ed program efforts into the afterschool environment, to provide children and families support in improving their health and wellness outside of the school day.
- SNAP-Ed works with food banks and pantries in the Securing Food Resources for Families initiative to increase access to healthy foods and create a culture around providing nutritious options at food assistance sites.
